Revamping the Middle-Aged Smile

Is middle-age chasing you down? Have your years done a number on your smile?

As you age, it’s common to see signs of yellowing – and no amount of whitening treatments can truly make a dent. You may have old fillings that are wearing out, molars that are breaking, bad breath – it all adds up to an unattractive smile, and an I-don’t-feel-great-about-myself feeling. (more…)

Dentures Do More Harm Than Good

Do you feel like your face appears sunken in? Botox isn’t going to fix the problem – it’s those dentures that are aging your features.

Wearing a denture accelerates bone loss. As a result, a denture-wearer’s dentures have to be relined to fit their mouth, leading to more bone loss. It’s an unfortunate cycle that negatively affects your appearance. (more…)

Setting a Good Example for Your Kids

We stress good oral health to our kids day after day, asking them, “Did you brush your teeth? Did you floss?” But adults don’t necessarily maintain good oral habits of their own.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, close to one-third of all adults in the United States have untreated tooth decay. One in seven adults aged 35 to 44 years has gum disease; for adults aged 65 years and older, this statistic increases to one in every four. And, sadly, tooth decay affects kids in the United States more than any other chronic infectious disease. (more…)

Scared of the Dentist?

One of the biggest excuses people have for avoiding necessary oral care is that they have a fear of the dentist. The result over time? Oral catastrophe.

Here’s the thing – the longer you wait to get the dental care you need, the worse your oral health will get. Ultimately, you’ll reach a point where such invasive treatment is needed that you’ll be really scared of the dentist’s chair and the multiple procedures needed to repair the damage. We can help ease your fears. (more…)

Has Soda Sabotaged Your Smile?

According to the American Dental Association, in the last 20 years, the consumption of soft drinks has increased 300 percent. Serving sizes have ballooned from 185 grams in the 1950s to 500 grams in the 1990s. Now that’s a lot of sugar – and a huge detriment to oral health.

The average can of soda has approximately 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar, but sugar alone is not the culprit for tooth decay. Carbonic and phosphoric acid in some of your favorite sodas can dissolve the calcium from your enamel. The result? Softened teeth that are a welcome mat for destructive bacteria; drinking sugar-free soda doesn’t make the beverages any better for your teeth. (more…)

The Success Rate of Dental Implants

Want strong teeth and a smile with longevity? According to a study published in The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants, dental implants have an extremely high success rate – about 95 percent. With proper care of your teeth and gums, your implants and new teeth can last for a very long time.

Dental implants are small, titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone. It’s important that the foundation for these implants is healthy, so if you have any gum disease or other oral health concerns, those will need to be addressed first. Once the implants are in place, replacement teeth – custom-made to suit your mouth and complement your face – are attached to the implant. (more…)

A Unique Type of Protection for Your New Smile

We all know someone who has broken a very expensive crown within just months of its placement. Invariably, the patient feels like there was something wrong with the dental work and the dentist thinks the patient was using their teeth to crack walnuts. Often, a nasty conflict arises over who is to blame.

To address this potential problem, the dentists of Smile Texas instituted an innovative Last Time You Pay Policy on all porcelain restorations that they place as part of a Smile Makeover. (more…)

Why You’re Never Too Old (or Young) for a Smile Makeover

No matter your age, you can benefit from a Smile Makeover. Whether you’re older and need an improvement over your unreliable dentures, or whether you’re young and want to start fresh by putting your best smile first, at Smile Texas we can find solutions for your dental needs.

People often go through life simply putting up with a dental problem, believing it’s not that big of a deal, or not worth facing their fear of the dentist. But your quality of life is tremendously affected if your dentures are ill-fitting, you have loose or missing teeth, or decay is setting in. (more…)

Why Dental Implants Are Better Than Teeth Whitening

Many people assume that the staining their teeth have endured over the years from coffee, wine, antibiotics, smoking, or other issues will be easily fixed by white strips or a professional whitening. But correcting tooth damage requires methods that have more longevity.

If you’ve ever tried over-the-counter whitening methods, you’re aware that they don’t really stand the test of time. Wouldn’t you love to have a natural-looking, white smile that isn’t going to fade as soon as you change your brand of whitening toothpaste? Dental implants and porcelain veneers are two options for discolored teeth. (more…)
