As a dentist, my greatest satisfaction comes from restoring the quality of life for someone who suffers each day due to the loss of one or more of their teeth. For those of us with a mouth full of healthy teeth, it's hard to imagine what these people deal with on a daily basis. Things we take for granted, such as biting, chewing and speaking clearly, are a challenge for those wearing an uncomfortable partial or full denture. Poor chewing leads to poor digestion and ultimately poor health. Many lose interest in food altogether. Then, there are the self-esteem issues that accompany feeling insecure about your ability to laugh, speak or smile. My desire to offer people with these problems a better solution motivated my interest in the area of dentistry known as dental implantology. The best solution to restoring the mouth of someone who has lost one or more teeth is to start by replacing the lost tooth root. That's just what a dental implant does. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that your jawbone will attach to (a process called osseointegration) just as if it were a natural tooth root. Then we can attach beautiful replacement teeth that will feel and function just like the real thing. In fact, probably better! Once completed the patient cares for their new smile by brushing and flossing. They can bite, chew and speak again with complete confidence. In many cases, they also turn back the hands of time as their new smile helps to restore a more natural jaw line.
Until recently, this procedure was associated with multiple surgeries with months of recovery time between each part of the treatment. The entire process would usually take 12 to 18 months. However, an entirely new approach has now been perfected that allows us to complete the restoration of an entire jaw in a single one-hour procedure. It all begins with an initial complimentary consultation in which we explain your treatment options and verify that your jaw bone is ready to support dental implants. We then schedule a CT scan of the patient's jaw. With this scan, we are able to conduct a virtual surgery on a computer that allows us to determine the optimum position for each dental implant. This avoids the lengthy, open-incision approach that used to be required. During this time, we also design and craft the beautiful custom replacement teeth that will attach to the dental implants. This entire process takes about four to six weeks. When all is ready, the patient comes in for a single appointment in which implants and replacement teeth are placed. Unlike previous dental implants that required months of recovery before they could support stress, this approach utilizes immediate load implants from Nobel Biocare. Because no incisions are required, there is virtually no down time. Many patients eat a light meal the same evening. Near full function is achieved in just a few days. In my 14 years of experience in dental implantology, I've never seen such a dramatic leap forward.
