Porcelain Crowns vs. Veneers: Which Option Is Right for You?

Your smile is important to you. That’s why when you have a chipped, decayed, or discolored tooth, you want to restore it — not lose it. Luckily, Smile Texas offers a couple of options for restoring your beautiful smile: Porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns. But which option is right for you?

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are a layer of material about 1 millimeter thick that is overlaid and bonded to the front of a tooth. They are often used to correct discolored, damaged, cracked, or chipped teeth to create a natural and cohesive smile.

They take two visits to be placed. During the first, the dentist will take impressions of the tooth or teeth and place a temporary veneer until the permanent one is complete. You will return to the office in about two weeks to have the permanent veneer securely bonded to your tooth.

Veneers are a great option because they look just like your natural teeth and can be customized to your mouth and smile.

How Are Porcelain Crowns Different?

Porcelain crowns are about 2 millimeters thick and cover the entirety of the tooth, much like a cap. To place them, the dentist will need to file down more of your tooth than necessary with a veneer. However, their porcelain material creates a natural appearance while keeping your teeth protected from further damage.

Getting a crown takes approximately the same amount of time as a veneer, and the process is similar as well. During your initial consultation, the dentist will take an impression of the tooth through a scan or a mold. They will then ask you to come back in to have the crown placed. After a few adjustments to make sure it feels comfortable and fits securely, you’ll be good to go.

Which One Is Right for You?

One of the biggest differences between crowns and veneers is what they are used for. Crowns are most commonly implemented for broken or misshapen teeth, severe decay, excessive discoloration, root canals, or as anchors for a bridge.

That being said, your dentist will likely recommend an option that will be the best solution based on your dental issue.
