Everyone knows that good oral health habits start by reducing sugars and acids. Candy can be extremely bad for the smile, especially when patients don’t brush their teeth immediately after consumption. So is chewing gum bad? Only if it has sugar. Chewing sugarless gum after a meal can prevent the development of cavities. This is because it increases saliva flow which washes away food particles and debris that can stick to the surfaces of the teeth. Saliva flow also reduces bacteria in the mouth, which is why many patients diagnosed with dry mouth are encouraged to chew sugarless gum.
Also, we encourage patients to look for products that have the seal from the American Dental Association, or ADA. This ensures that the product is appropriate and allows patients to maintain a healthy smile. Gum with sugar should be avoided and switched for a sugar free alternative to get the best benefits.
There is no substitute for proper brushing. Brushing the teeth after each meal is the most effective way to reduce the development of bacteria, acids, and sugars. However, sugar free gum can be a solution when patients are away from home or are unable to brush their teeth. It does not mean that patients can avoid brushing their teeth if they are constantly chewing sugar-free gum. Patients will still need to visit their dentist regularly, preferably every six months, for cleanings and evaluations.
