At Smile Texas, we want to make sure our patients have healthy smiles. In order to spot problems early, or to see a smile’s development beneath the gum line, dental x-rays may need to be completed. Sugarland, TX area patients who are interested in having their smile evaluated may benefit from dental x-rays.

What are dental x-rays?

Dental x-rays, which may also be called radiographs, are images that are made of a smile to evaluate one’s oral health. These images will pick up the teeth and bones. With low levels of radiation, these x-rays can capture images that are used for diagnostic purpose. They can show problems such as cavities, decay, disease, or impacted teeth. They are not performed at every visit, but may be done at a patient’s first appointment or any consecutive appointment where the dentist has a concern that needs to be evaluated further. There are also several factors that may exist that affect how often x-rays are done. This may include:

  • A patient’s age
  • A patient’s current oral health status
  • Symptoms of oral disease that are present
  • A patient’s history of gum disease or tooth decay
  • A patient’s first dental visit at Smile Texas

What risks are associated with dental x-rays?

While radiographs do involve radiation, the levels of exposure are low enough for it to be considered for both children and adults. However, patients who are pregnant should avoid any type of x-ray because it is not considered safe for developing fetuses. Most other patients are able to have dental x-rays done as needed without much risk or concern.

What I expect during my dental x-rays?

The dental hygienist starts by placing a led bib onto the patient that can cover the body from the chest down to the legs. The staff may then place bite appliances into the mouth and direct the patient as to how they need to turn their head to get the most accurate images. The dental hygienist then goes behind the wall and will push a button, which activates the x-ray device and takes the image. The images are often ready within minutes and can be reviewed by the dentist.
