Porcelain veneer

How veneers are used in dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry continues to be a popular way for patients to address a range of aesthetic concerns with a smile. It used to be expensive and only available to those who could afford them, but now, cosmetic dental work is more affordable than ever! Patients are often excited to learn about the changes they can make to their smile on a budget. With the team at Smile Texas in Sugar Land, TX, patients can enhance the appearance of their smile in an effective and inexpensive manner. One of our more popular cosmetic treatments is that of the porcelain veneer.

How do porcelain veneers work?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic that can disguise imperfections near the front of the smile. These teeth, called by professionals as the anterior teeth, are covered by bonding a veneer over the top of a prepared tooth. The veneer looks just like natural tooth enamel, ensuring a natural-looking restoration.

How can I use a porcelain veneer?

One or more veneers can be used on the smile, depending on the patient’s unique needs. Below are just a few situations in which a porcelain veneer may be used:

  • To change the color of a tooth that might be permanently stained
  • To change the shape of a tooth, in width or length
  • To maintain consistent color, shape, and size of teeth across the dental arch
  • To disguise spaces between the teeth
  • To cover a tooth that is misaligned or crooked, sometimes referred to as “instant orthodontics”
  • To improve bite function and connection to reduce wear on other teeth
  • To disguise teeth that are chipped or cracked

What alternative treatments might I consider?

The type of treatment that might be a good alternative for veneers will depend greatly on the imperfection that needs to be resolved. Some alternatives may include composite resin bonding, orthodontic work, or dental crowns.
