Gum recontouring is an area of treatment during which the dentist will address the gum line for cosmetic purposes. Patients with a gummy smile may have excess gum tissue covering the crowns of the natural, adult teeth. By removing some of this gum tissue, the dentist can create the illusion of a more balanced smile. The gum line is reformed where it is more aesthetic, and patients can smile with confidence!
Patients with gummy smiles are not the only individuals who can benefit from gum recontouring. Patients who have experienced the later stages of gum disease often experience gum recession. This causes the gums to pull back from the teeth. With gum recontouring, patients can also add gum tissue where necessary with specialized techniques such as gum grafting. All these options are available with the team of Smile Texas!
As with any procedure, there is often a time period of healing and recovery. Gum contouring patients may experience some mild discomfort for a few days, but this can be addressed with the use of over-the-counter pain medications. Patients will often benefit as well from eating softer foods while their gum tissues heal from the procedure. This may include eggs, yogurts, and pastas. Patients should follow their dentist’s instructions for brushing and flossing the teeth as these areas heal to avoid infection or further problems. Any time a patient experiences problems such as excessive bleeding or continued swelling, they should visit their dentist for further evaluation.
